My Project

My students are such a beautifully diverse group of children beginning their transition to adolescence. These bright kids not only have to deal with middle school struggles, but many come from unstable homes and depend on school to be the place that opens the world to them. These students deserve to be provided with resources like books that can help them develop as scholars and connect to the world around them in new ways.

Books are such a vital way for students to grow and blossom as learners.

In order for students to feel motivated and inspired to pick up an actual book (when technology is often the easier choice), the books being offered should be what they actually want to read. Most of the current books in my classroom were inherited from my predecessors from many years ago. While many of them may be good books, they are old and dusty and don't feel relatable to most of my students.

The books that I would like to get for my classroom in order to grow our class library are ones that will excite students. Half of the books are graphic novels, which are excellent choices for those students who "hate reading" but don't mind checking out a comic; students will still be practicing their reading without being overwhelmed by walls of text. Several of the chapter books being requested are based in Hawai'i with Hawaiian locations, characters, and culture as well. These culturally relevant books will touch the hearts and minds of many of our children who have never felt truly represented in a book before. The whole selection of books are focused on matching student interests and celebrating diversity.
