Books Needed to Fill a Rad Reading Room

My students need high-interest and inspirational books for their recreational reading time. They all live on campus and would benefit from an excellent selection of books to keep them occupied, engaged, and continuously learning.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Palacios's classroom raised $970

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

BR is a juvenile boys' placement facility and high school. Our students arrive from various juvenile halls throughout the state, and many of them arrive with emotional problems, gang affiliations, anti-social behaviors, drug issues, family problems, and an assortment of legal issues that have led to their placement here. The boys are between the ages of thirteen to eighteen, who complete an average stay of six to nine months.

The purpose of our school facility is a two part-system: First, it provides a comprehensive educational program for the boys sent here, and second, the boys must successfully participate in the residential treatment program before their release.

The students live on campus, attend school and group sessions daily, and follow the structure and activities of the program. Our students attend school Monday through Friday and participate in a variety of group activities after school and on weekends. Through our project, we hope to create an additional activity, recreational reading time.

My Project

Many of our students ask us for specific books. Sadly, our response is, "We don't have it." Our goal is to acquire a significant collection of high-interest books for teen boys, especially those most requested. We plan to create an updated, functional, and appealing reading room for our students who live on campus, but we need to fill it with books that our students are interested in. Many of our kids like to read for fun, but the availability of recreational books is slim to none. Unfortunately, they have no access to a public library since they are in a placement, and the books we have on campus are very outdated, non-fiction resources, and not what the students are looking for at all.

These new books will allow us to fulfill students' requests for specific book titles and continuously promote a love for reading.

Students will be able to take their reading to the next level outside of the classroom setting. These selected books will increase students' imagination, allow them to relate to characters, teach valuable life lessons, improve their own character, and allow them to gain exposure to different genres, time periods and cultures.

Many of the books requested by students are also inspirational, character-building, and infused with meaningful messages which will assist students in their future success. If the students such as ours take are motivated to ask and seek for more reading, who wouldn't want to propel them further? We hope you consider donating to our project. Thank you!
