Books Needed For New Genocide Course

My Students

Our school is full of students who are eager to learn! They are constantly searching for new ways to engage with our curriculum. We have a wide variety of students from all walks of life who enjoy finding similarities despite their differences. Our school is located outside of Winston-Salem, NC, and has a mix of students from rural and urban neighborhoods.

We are different from any other school I have taught at.

Our school motto is "No Raider Rides Alone" and it is something our students take to heart. They are constantly helping each other out.

Students have signed up for a new course, Social Injustice: The Holocaust and Modern Genocide, and need materials to learn. They are eager to learn about the history of genocides around the world and ways to combat the many injustices people suffering from modern genocides face.

My Project

This year our school is offering a new course: Social Injustice- The Holocaust and Modern Genocide. The focus of the class is to look at the history behind the Holocaust and other genocides and explore ways to fight against such injustice in our society today.

"They Called Us Enemy" by George Takei will allow students to learn about the Japanese internment camps in America during WWII.

The graphic novel will present the Takei's account in a way that is accessible to students and lead to many class discussions. Students will respond the graphic novel through journal entries and compare it's events to other nonfiction texts.
