My students need to each have a sturdy book baggy they are able to take home without falling apart and losing their books to practice their reading skills with families.

My Students
My first graders are in a high poverty school and a quarter of my students are ELL (English Language Learners). We give all students opportunities to access books in the classroom and school, but are in need of a sturdy bags for which to take books home to practice. Most of the time the plastic book baggies they take their independent reading books home in fall apart and they lose their books. My kids love to read and want to show off their reading skills at home too!
My Project
By being able to send books home without getting lost, students will continue to grow and build on their reading skills. The nice book baggies will encourage students to take home these sturdy totes to practice their reading rather than a torn up ziploc bag! Research has shown children who read at home with their families are not only continuing to activate their brains for comprehension and visualizing like we do in the classroom, but also continues to develop enjoyment of reading. These bags also relates to our science lesson about sustainability! These reliable reusable bags are teaching the students to put less in landfills!
