Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been a first grade teacher for the past three years at a school where the majority of the students live in poverty. These students are bright students but have little or no support at home or the proper resources due to language barriers and because of the fact that they come from low-income families.

Because of these circumstances, my students don't have any books at home to read and build literacy. For a first grade, English language learner to become successful in learning the language, he or she needs to understand the language and then be able to read it. The more children read, the better they become at reading. It's as simple as that. The more enjoyable the things they read are, the more they'll stick with them and develop the reading skills that they'll need for full access to information in their adult lives. Reading should be viewed as a pleasurable activity.

In order to help my students read more and enjoy what they are reading, I have asked for several books that they are interested in. These books are mainly books by Dr. Seuss and from the Berenstein Bear’s collection. My students are allowed to go to our school library once a week and check out one book at a time. This limits my students to what they can read at home and they get bored. Therefore having my own checkout system in my classroom with the books that they like will give them more choice and accessibility. My students will be able to take these books home and exchange them with different books whenever they please. By doing this, it will give my students additional resources to take home and use to help them become more successful learners.

It’s difficult to see these students who have so much potential fall through the cracks because of their family situation. This will allow them to make my classroom to be another resource for the students to access to become better learners. You will be able to help them read and become more successful at it.
