My Project

The idea of books as Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors comes from Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop. She states, "Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books." I would like to make sure every student who enters my classroom has a chance to be represented in our classroom library.

"When there are enough books available that act as both mirrors and windows for all our children, they will see that we can celebrate both our differences and our similarities because together they are what makes us all human.”

This quote from Bishop is another reason I'm working to curate a balanced classroom library. Empathy grows and flourishes when you have a chance to step into the thoughts and experiences of others through literature.

This collection of books represents authors and topics of different backgrounds, genders, abilities, and life experiences. These books will serve as windows and mirrors to the student population I serve.
