My students are high achievers who come from diverse backgrounds. In my regular education classroom I have 16 first-graders who have diverse learning needs, but for the most part they are bright, curious, hands-on learners who all love to read and be read to. Reading is an important and favorite time in our classroom.
"Children need to be able to see their race, culture, family dynamics, neighborhoods, and experiences, as well as their triumphs and tribulations, represented in books" -LLL & KK.
The goal of this project is to bring this books into our classroom library that represent all the students I teach.
My Project
I have requested books that I will read to my students over the 6-week Global Read Aloud project in 2021 as well a few current award winning books to keep our classroom books current and diverse. This is a favorite project that I do with my students each year. Through the Global Read Aloud Project my students will make connections and comparisons to Duncan Tonatiuh's illustrations in each book. Using his books will make connections with students world-wide who are reading the same book through book and video chats as we dig deep into the theme of the stories. Connecting to other students world-wide will allow my students the opportunity to learn about other cultures and parts of not only our great country, but also our vast world.
By making global connections through book chats my students will become more globally sensitive and tolerant.
Being sensitive and tolerant to others, their personal story, and thinking of others' point of view will provide my students with life-long skills for building relationships.
