My Project

I had a class conversation this morning about the Donor's Choose grant and how we can use it to purchase needed classroom materials in order to be successful. This year, I am in a new grade and a new classroom, and I don't have a lot of resources for fourth graders.

I asked the class to think of ideas for things that we don't have or things we need more of that will improve our classroom.

I tried to include as many of their ideas as I could, without going over the budget of this grant.

One popular idea was to purchase more headphones since we only have a handful that work properly and they are getting old. I chose two types that I think will last a long time and will suit students' needs. They have a durable cord and are noise-blocking.

Another idea was to purchase indoor recess games and activities. I found several that students suggested including specific board games like Catan, Game of Life, and action games like Klask (a magnetic ball game) and a sling disc game similar to air hockey.

Purchasing graphic novels, especially the Wings of Fire series was another common idea to improve our classroom library. Some students also wanted joke books and found several that I hope they like.

I also had students sharing ideas for a class pet so I suggested a fish tank to bring some of the guppies in our outdoor garden pond into our classroom. One student is also hoping to catch some shrimp from a nearby brackish water tidepool and we can set up a second fish tank using a glass jar.

Hopefully acquiring these materials will improve my students' experiences in our classroom!
