My Students

Within all classrooms, building a community and capturing the thoughts, ideas and imaginations of awesome students is a must. I have the opportunity to mold the minds of 2nd grade students in a personalized, blended learning, multi-age environment. My students live in an area where crime and poverty are at an all time high. They are faced with many challenges in their daily lives. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds within the Hispanic and African American community with over 80% of them receiving free lunch.

Our school provides our students a personalized learning, loving, diverse, cultured, nurturing, safe haven where students are pushed to their highest potential despite the downfalls of their community.

Our students are taught to thrive beyond the expectation and to always be resilient. We encourage our students to explore and to be open to learning new things. "The more you read the more you'll know, the more that you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr.Seuss

My Project

Reading is an important skill that needs to be developed in children. It is vital to their success and survival in the world. If students had more books to chose from, or even a better selection of books in the classroom library, students love of reading during Read to Self time in class will become a huge hit for my 2nd graders. Each week students are sent home with a reading log where they have to read for 20 minutes each night; because I have such a enthusiastic group of readers, I have parents frequently asking me for books for their scholars very often. The parents, students, and myself feel they should be reading more books of their interest and most importantly at their academic level. This library expansion will provide an an opportunity for students to choose more books at their instructional level and choose books that interest them. The return of this investment would be the forever love of reading and the excitement my students will have when they share their weekly story element video reflection on the book they have been reading in class.

The more children read, the better they become at reading.

It's as simple as that. The more enjoyable the things they read are, the more they'll stick with them and develop the reading skills that they'll need for grades to come. Reading should a fun and pleasurable activity for our scholars. It should also provide useful and interesting factual information for their life long success.
