My Students

Teaching at a Title I middle school comes along with encountering a diverse group of promising scholars that learn at varying levels. About five years ago, we became a low-income school, and students with less opportunities and resources to be successful became the majority on our campus.

My students have skills to overcome adversity that not many students their age have even thought of experiencing before.

They are bright, inspiring and persevering. They learn the most from hands-on activities that allow them to think critically while still having fun and taking ownership of their learning. Their favorite things about my class are the risks I am willing to take to help keep them engaged and learning. They get excited when walking into my classroom to see that I have transformed it to resemble the setting of literature units. My students love the feeling of independence and learn from making mistakes. My students are brave as they navigate through this time in their lives, trying to find who they are. My students give me purpose, making me wonder everyday how I got so lucky to have a job like this.

My Project

Our 7th Grade novel selection has been here since our school opened about 30 years ago. Many of the novels we have available are outdated and unrelatable for my 21st century learners.

"Ghost" by Jason Reynolds is more or less the story of many of my students real lives.

When I read this book I thought of how many of my students would relate to this and knew this was a must have novel for our classroom. I want novels that my students will enjoy reading to help build life-long readers.

The messages and diction in this novel fit the demographics of my students and would be sure to engage my diverse range of kids. We would use this book for a novel study, where students will analyze themes, gain reading comprehension skills, and be exposed to real world and cultural experiences. The purposeful questions that will be posed during this novel study will spark thoughtful and in-depth class discussions. Myself and the other 7th Grade Language Arts teacher on campus would love to read this book and align curriculum!
