My Students

I teach Language Arts to 47 fifth grade students.

My students have diverse backgrounds, with many being from low income families and broken homes. These students are still required to meet the same standards and work hard each day while they are in my classroom.

My Project

My students need high interest books, such as Dork Diaries, Big Nate and Percy Jackson to add to our classroom library. One of the expectations I have for my students is to truly enjoy reading. It is important that students develop a love for reading at a young age. A love for reading is the foundation for their growth, future knowledge, and beliefs and opinions. While some students naturally love to read, others struggle with the initiative to pick up a book. After collaborating with my students, we came up with a list of books that are the most interesting, most exciting, and most engaging for our class. With these books as a part of our library, students will be able to select books that will grab their attention and sustain their interest as they read. They will be implementing strategies learned in class without even realizing that is what they are doing.

Having these books as a part of our classroom library will allow readers who normally struggle with an initiative to read to want to pick up a book and become captivated by it.

Developing this desire and this love for reading will stay with them throughout the course of their life.
