This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever meet some incredible children and you can't believe that they are only 6 and 7? I think about this every day. My first graders are such an incredibly diverse group who vary in ethnicity, home language, socioeconomic status and learning style that come together to form our community.

My students are part of our school community that is very special.

We are a small school community that is committed to creating an equitable learning environment to support the academic and social-emotional growth of our students across K-8. While our school might be small, our learning takes us far.

My Project

My students are READERS! Their reading muscles are growing as they devour our classroom library. Our library needs a refresh of high interest and culturally relevant books that are just right for my readers.

I want our classroom library to refect my students and their interests.

This is why I have picked books that have characters of color and stories that are relevant to their 6 and 7-year-old lives. Seeing yourself or characters that look like you or face a similar problem will help grow a better sense of self. Reading is a powerful tool to grow confidence! Let's give our students books that are made for us and books that look like us!
