My Students

Our students come from impoverished areas of Philadelphia. For the past 2 books they have read in their English class they have only read from photo copies of the teacher's copy of the book. They haven't had their own copy yet of a book that is on their curriculum.

Our 9th grade class is made up of 90 students from varying backgrounds.

I work at a high school in the Frankford area of Philadelphia, which is notoriously impoverished and under served. Our students work very hard, but rarely have the necessary materials to reach their full potential. The students would love to have their own copy of the book so they can feel deserving of the materials that other students in other places are given.

My Project

My students need multiple copies of Persepolis and Night. Students will read the books Night and Persepolis in support of their social studies class and complete a books study. Each book follows children through their struggles through different life experiences around the world. Our students face issues in their neighborhoods every day and relate to books where the protagonist lives through a troubled life but succeeds in the end. One book follows a boy through his struggles and the other follows a girl through her struggles.

The biggest difference that this will make is putting a book in a child's hands that truly deserves it.

Many students in the US grow up in an environment where books are plentiful, this is not the case for my students. Students will feel deserving of a proper education and take more pride in their school and their education by having proper resources.
