Books for the Book Nook

My students need a book display for easy access to books relating to our art lesson, and a selection of books that reinforce the art lesson objectives.

My Students

Roughly 100 students a day, ranging from Kindergarten to 4th grade visit the art room for 1 hour every 3 days. I encourage my students to take ownership of their art room by keeping materials easily accessible for their use, and teaching them to care for them, and clean them up.

We are a neighborhood school, with the majority of our students living close.

There is a rich history, with many of our students having parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins that attended our school. Our school is very loving and accepting of all learners, and strives to see the special gifts and talents that each student brings to our community. Some of our students are English Language Learners, and for the most part, their home language is Spanish. All of our students are highly active, fun loving, and generous. They love to contribute to community projects, as well as after school events. Many form friendships which will stay with them as they transfer to Middle and HIgh School.

My Project

While I have a collection of books, it is a struggle for students to both access the books that I have for them, and return them at the time they are finished. All of the books fall over on each other. I would like to create a book system where I put out the books that are relevant, and rotate them so that more books get read, and students make connections between the books and the lessons. I have selected variety of books that both teach facts like shapes and colors and art concepts, as well as some that incorporate art history, and art thinking (fixing ones mistakes, the fear of trying something new etc). In order for students to love reading, and read for pleasure, they must have access to a variety of books.

Having the books, as well as the ability to access them easily will help in my goal to encourage students to both read for information, as well as read for pleasure.

One of the struggles with running an art program is that students work at different paces and levels. Having access to books offers a place to go for ideas, as well as a place to enjoy if finished early.
