Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 3rd grade teacher at PS/MS 194 in the Bronx. All of my students come from low-income households and may not have many books to read at home. This year, I am teaching a class which contains general education students mixed with some students who receive special education services. Many of my students this year are reading on a first grade level even though they are entering third grade this year. I do have a well stocked classroom library, however all of the books are on third grade level and are too difficult for my struggling readers. I am requesting a variety of books that my struggling readers can use every day during independent reading time. These books will help my students become better readers because they will contain vocabulary and stories that are just right for their reading levels. In addition, students become motivated to read when they see that the books in the classroom are just right for them. Many students become frustrated and dislike reading when the books seem too difficult for them but easy for most of their other classmates. I have chosen a combination of classics such as Frog And Toad Are Friends and newer titles such as Dora The Explorer to make sure that my students have books that they are excited about reading.
