My Students

Students can be successful readers if they read books on their level. If they get frustrated when the text is too difficult, they give up.

I teach second grade in an urban area where parents are struggling to make ends meet.

We have recent immigrants from many countries (Somalia, Burma, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia). The need is great for materials to supplement our reading program. I need beginning books for my struggling learners. I use the money budgeted for supplies such as paper and pencils each year. Very little is left over for other essentials. I consider books as essential learning materials.

My Project

Students need to be successful as they acquire written language. Books with limited and repetitious text are stepping stones to higher and more challenging text. Second graders are definitely social butterflies! They love to read with and to each other. By having 3 copies of each book, students will be able to sit in our reading area and enjoy listening and reading to each other.

You will make such a difference in our students' lives.

We stress everyday that our students do their best. With the proper challenging books, students can practice their reading strategies and skills. Our students can be the bright lights of the future if given the chance to shine.
