Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The world has been a stressful and emotional place for the past 2 years, especially for children! Many of my students have lost a loved one, have been through family financial changes, and even lost their "home" due to Covid. We utilize our Second Step SEI curriculum daily, but I would also like to bring in some new read alouds for my class that will allow us to have meaningful conversations, and that can link to their social/emotional development.
My hope is to be able to bring books to my kids that show them how to manage their emotions, be self-aware, and show kindness to others.
Working at a Title I school, where everyone receives free breakfast, and over 75% of our students receive free lunch, many of our families have limited funding to provide books for their children at home. Our weekly Second Step lessons focus on many social-emotional topics, but I'd like to give my students additional content to make connections to.
My Project
Being able to add wonderful books to my classroom library for my students, is really important to me. I believe that through class read alouds, a teacher can also help to build a thriving classroom community and family. Reading also helps students expand their vocabulary, increase their knowledge about people, cultures, emotions, topics, and improves brain function and memory.
These books will help my students to make personal connections to the characters and themselves, as well as be able to identify their feelings and emotions through the read alouds.
My students will be able to learn about emotions, feelings, and actions, as well as people, self-awareness, and perseverance by adding these books to our classroom library! The book bins will be used to store the SEI books on my bookcases! Getting this project funded will help my students build a strong classroom community while learning social and emotional skills.
