Books for Recent Refugees

My students need 7 copies each of 13 books, including "Zomo the Rabbit: A Trickster Tale from West Africa" and "Miss Nelson Is Missing!".

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. L.'s classroom raised $1,158

This project is fully funded

I teach recent immigrants and refugees from East Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Many are recent arrivals to the United States and are learning English for the first time.

To say that my students lack supplies would be an understatement. My students regularly come to school without winter coats or socks; not because they are absentminded, but because there simply is not money to buy them. While other teachers and I scramble to gather donated coats, the thought of suggesting to my students that they buy books for themselves is almost laughable. With the public library miles away and the rising cost of public transportation, my students are left with few options.

Providing opportunities for my students to read high-quality beginning-reader books is paramount to fostering a lifelong love of reading. Dynamic literature like Horton Hears a Who, Goodnight Moon, and Curious George are the titles that inspired me to first fall in love with reading.

Your donation would not only provide an opportunity for students to read well-loved stories. It will also serve as a key component in learning English, an essential skill for success in working world. This donation is not simply about putting books in a classroom; it is about investing in the idea of the quintessential American Dream. My students have survived numerous obstacles to get to America, please help me in providing them with the tools to make their hopes for a positive future a lasting, concrete reality.
