My Project

My project focuses on developing reading skills in small groups while also supporting content-area learning. I aim to expand my classroom library with books that directly relate to the topics students are studying in their classes. This will encourage them to explore their curiosity and deepen their understanding of subjects that interest them.

Many of my small group students are at risk in reading.

The small group setting allows me to provide targeted instruction using specific reading strategies. I want to use this time not only to build reading skills but also to reinforce learning in history. I’ve created themed text sets that include articles, novels, graphic novels, and short stories, giving students a chance to read broadly on specific topics. These resources will help create a richer learning experience, enabling students to make connections across texts, synthesize information, engage in meaningful discussions, and grow both as readers and as learners of history.

My ultimate goal is to have students ask, "Why are we reading about history in reading group?"—because I want them to understand that literacy is a key part of learning across all subjects.
