FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. V.'s classroom raised $464

I have been a NYC public school teacher for 18 years and every year is a new adventure. I teach in a Title One school in the Mariner's Harbor section of Staten Island. I teach 5th grade and I usually have 28 or 29 students in my class.
Most of my students enjoy reading. One of my challenges every year is to find books that they LOVE to read. One of the best compliments I ever got was, "Where do you find such great books?" I'm like a salesman in my classroom. I like to introduce every new book with a little "sales pitch" to get everyone to want to read it. It always works. These books that I'm asking for will get the students started on their independent reading for 5th grade. One of the state standards is that every student must read 25 books a year. These books will give them a larger selection of interesting titles to choose from to get them towards their goal of reading 25 books.
Over the years I have purchased many books, and I have also received books through other grants. I save all of them each year, so my new students have a larger and larger library of books to choose from. They read them in class and at home. Each student keeps a notebook that they write in after they read each day. They can write a summary, write about interesting characters, or they can write about how they can relate to a character or to the story. Reading every day helps them with comprehension, vocabulary, stamina, and their writing skills.
In my proposal, I am requesting several copies of great novels to complete class sets that I know the students will love, for example, "Sounder", "James and the Giant Peach", "Last Summer With Maizon", and "Shiloh".
The more books my students have, the better readers they will become. Thank you for helping to educate my students!!!
