This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I graduated from Alliance Smidt Tech, the high school I currently work in, four years ago. It has changed ever since the pandemic and resources available to me are at an all time low. Alliance Smidt Tech is a title one school which means that at least 40% of its student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. The community that houses my high school and still houses me to this day is by no means affluent, but that does not justify the educational inequity my students face.
I want to bridge the educational inequity by encouraging students to read books that they will enjoy.
My current classroom library has books from the early 2000s and 90's but those books no longer catch the attention of modern teens. Just like everyone, they want to read something that feels like their age, not something from their older siblings age or even their parents age. They can tell the difference no matter how hard you try to convince them that some books are timeless!
All of the books listed here will help give students the opportunity to fall in love with reading which will help them improve their reading levels, reduce their screen time, and become active members of the classroom. Some choose not to participate not because they are "bad" kids but because they are not confident in their English abilities. Giving them books that they'll like will help them practice the skills that they learned.
I am currently working with the books that I have, but I only have so many modern books and so many students that deserve these books.
