My Project

What is the one thing that will help my students become better readers? READING! The more they read, the more confident they will become, and the more successful they will be.

My students are a very diverse group of learners.

They include ELL students, refugees, students with learning disabilities, as well as students who have traveled to many different countries. Some come from inner-city neighborhoods, where parents work night shifts and students spend a lot of time in after-school care. Others live in suburban neighborhoods, where their parent can stay at home. Having a diverse group of learners can cause challenges in meeting the students' needs when it comes to reading. I want to be able to always have a book at hand for a student who needs one.

Having books at their fingertips is a must for my students. They are constantly asking me for books that I recommend. Having more high-interest books at the ready will allow them to become life-long readers and gain a love of reading.

My Project

More and more research shows that students need easy access to books in their classrooms. My goal is to have quality literature in my classroom for my 5th-grade readers to read. Many students can be reluctant readers, which is why it is so important to have new, high-interest books for students of all reading levels.

Having a strong classroom library is extremely important.

Part of helping students become lifelong readers is giving them time to read books that interest them. I'm always trying to keep books in my room that are new, not the same ones they have already read. Once you hook students into a book they love, the opportunities for them to learn are endless.
