Books For Independent Reading

My students need books to create interest bins for independent reading time. The books chosen fall into the categories of families, diversity, and nature. My students love discussing their families and learning about the world.

My Students

This year, I have the pleasure of following some of my students from preschool into Pre-K! I am so excited to see the progress they all make from two years of playing and learning together. My students love spending their days reading books to one another, exploring new topics, and using their imaginations.

Our school is a diverse community of learners from many different backgrounds and abilities.

Despite any challenges my students may face both in and out of the classroom, they come to school each day with an eagerness to learn and have fun. They know our classroom is a safe space to explore, make mistakes, and learn together. I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish as a team!

My Project

This year, my students are on the brink of reading, and we decided to create book bins for them to choose from. These book bins go along with a certain theme and students can choose a book based on a theme they are interested in. With the books, students will practice many early literacy skills such as looking for letters or sight words they know, tracking print, book handling skills, and even starting to read.

Each day, students will be using the books during our independent reading time and then they will get to discuss what they have read with a classmate.

Not only will these topics picked provide great opportunities for connections, but they will spark some great conversations between students. We are really looking forward to watching them blossom as young readers and learn to converse about the literature they enjoy.
