My Students
Can you imagine second grade students reading at a Kindergarten level?? That is a reality in my classroom. This year my students reading levels range from a Kindergarten level to a beginning first grade. It is my job to teach each student how to read targeting skills that they need.
My students all live in the inner-city.
They all live well below the state specified poverty standards. They receive most if not all their meals at school and face tremendous hardships at such a young age. They lack home support due to the fact that most parents work long hours and do not speak English. They come to school wanting to learn and with a great desire to succeed. They know that they must learn to read if they want to do well in school.
My Project
I am requesting sets of guided reading books specifically in levels D, E, F, and G. These books will serve students that are reading at those level practice reading without frustration and with comprehension. In addition, they will also help me tailor instruction based on the specific need of each child. Guided reading enables the teacher to plan for individualized instruction according to what skills a student needs to move up. Second grade students must be at a K level. Having these sets of book will help my students make progress towards that goal and get them reading at grade level.
Please help my student become proficient readers.
Research shows that if a child is not reading by nine their chances of dropping out are over 50%. I want to endure that all students have an opportunity to grow and progress in their reading. I want them to go to third grade well prepared to use reading as a vehicle to learn. Please help me break the illiteracy cycle one classroom at a time.
