My Students

I teach both regular language arts students and struggling readers. Students in my reading class spend time reading every day. Many of them start the year saying they don't like to read. I want them to finish the year having fallen in love with books.

My reading students are in middle school and, if they are taking my class, they are not on grade level for reading.

Even though they may not read as well as their peers, they are often willing to take a leap and read a more challenging book if I can get them to see how interesting it is. It's essential that I have a compelling, age-appropriate, and up-to-date classroom library.

My Project

So often students come into my class saying that they hate reading or that there aren't any books that interest them. I hope to change that. The books I am adding to my classroom library have been chosen to appeal to a wide range of readers. I am looking specifically for more books with mystery and suspense, since my classroom library is lacking in this often-requested genre, but I am also trying to round out other genres and add new titles that are exciting or address challenges my students may be facing in their own lives.

I really believe that there is a book out there for every student that can help turn him or her into a reader.

It is my job to help students find that magic book that will help them get hooked. To do that, I need contemporary reading material.

I teach both reluctant and voracious readers, but I hope that by providing a variety of books in the classroom, I can help all readers to expand their interests and improve their reading ability. I read between 50 and 70 YA books each year, promote several books each week through book talks, and try to create a culture of reading in my classroom. New books help add to that culture and see that individual student interests are met.
