My Project
Transitioning to a new school is hard enough for a kid, but transitioning to a new country where you don't even speak the language is a million times harder! Spanish-speaking students may feel frightened, overwhelmed and isolated as they sit in classrooms unable to speak/understand the language of their peers and teachers. Furthermore, while ESL/ENL programs exist, they are not fully immersive so these students spend multiple periods everyday struggling to learn. Education is a right for all students regardless of language or country of origin and its my job as an educator to do all I can to provide it.
I want to help ease the transition by providing students with fun, enjoyable Spanish language graphic novels that can transport them to another world while simultaneously helping them build their English fluency.
We all know the transformative power of reading a good book- they can transport a reader to a new world! Spanish-speaking students should have a chance to enjoy that experience. Furthermore, studies show that strong Spanish reading skills can help English language learners with their development of English by strengthening skills necessary for comprehension that are transferrable across languages.
