This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have such an amazing class! These kids are so eager to be back in school and learning new things. It has been a pretty crazy couple of years for them. My students were in second grade when COVID hit. Many of them are struggling with phonics, reading fluency and comprehension because of that lost year. I want to use the laminating sheets to help me create a sound wall, as well as phonics posters. This will allow me to show visuals of what their mouths are doing when they make certain sounds. The mirrors will help the students see how sounds are made in their mouths, these will be used in whole and small group settings. Once the students learn the sounds of letters and blends, they will be better able to read and write words. This will help with their comprehension and writing skills.

Reading is key!

One of the things I want my students to know is that there is a book for everyone. Reading should be enjoyable! For this reason, I want my classroom library to have books my students want and graphic novels and scary stories are what they are asking for! The book lights will be used during our Torchlight Thursdays, which is time the students can read books silently, but in a darkened room. It’s like reading at night with a blanket over their heads- they LOVE it! This time really teaches the students that reading is fun and that makes them want to read more.

Finally, our school is new and we have tables instead of desks. While this is great for group work and discussions, there are times when the kids would like some space to work independently. The privacy boards would give them their space.
