This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
DEAR time: Drop Everything And Read~ This is part of our everyday routine in class 102. We strive to create interested, lifelong readers. I am requesting books for my leveled reading library. Biscuit and Clifford, along with other Readers, are sure to motivate and engage my students in reading.
My students share a common thread: they all want to learn.
They each have learning goals and those goals are varied. Some students want to be able to write a sentence by the end of the first grade, while others want to be able to write a short story. Their goals are based on their individual learning needs and capabilities, and I will strive to have each student reach each of their goals, pushing them further than they think they can go. My students are mostly from low-wage families. This is a working community and many of the students come from newly immigrant families. The families are here to work and better themselves, searching for the American Dream. The students are here to learn. All of their "school learning" has to get done at school. Parents are too busy working or do not speak the language, and cannot help their children at home. Many of my students feel like school is their home. My students are lovely, happy, excited children. They need lots of love and hugs from me!
My Project
My students will use these books as part of their "book baggies". Each week, students will bring books home in a plastic "baggie". These books will be at their reading level. Students will be able to read these books independently and fill out their reading log. Students will also "share out" book reviews with small groups when we practice having "literature conversations". Each week, the "book baggies" are returned and students will pick a new "book baggie". In this way, the books will be circulated among the class. From daily reading, students will gain reading fluency. The use of "book baggies" helps students to become not only fluent readers, but also interested readers. Through daily practice, students will be able to jump to a higher reading level more quickly. Having access to books at their reading level is a huge bonus for students who are unable to frequent the local library and who do not get read to by adults at home.
I think knowing that these books were donated will have a large impact on these students.
My first graders often feel like they do not have many people who "care" about them. Knowing that a stranger believed in their education and believed that reading was an important, valued part of education, would really give the students a sense of pride and a sense of responsibility. They will have the tools that they need and will know that they can independently utilize those tools to achieve reading success.
