Books for Brilliant Scholars

My students need high interest independent reading books for our classroom library.

My Students

What do you remember about middle school? What will you help 70 brilliant and hard working scholars remember?

We are the College Preparatory Learning Community of Readers, Writers, Listeners, and Speakers.

We are the class of 2019 (the year we will graduate from college). We are at a high poverty middle school in NY, and we are looking for some exciting new independent reading books from a donor like you!

My Project

As a third year teacher in a young school, I quickly discovered that students are brilliant, yet many of my scholars are reading below grade level. The average reading level in my 8th grade classroom is a 6th grade level, and I have scholars reading as low as a 4th grade level. Book selections have been in the past due to lack of resources. Our school does not have a library so teachers build their own classroom libraries with some help from school funds. We have done our best to acquire as many books as possible through thrift stores and drives, but it is challenging to find high interest, popular titles that are affordable on my teacher salary.

My scholars work so hard and are on track to make 2 years of reading growth this year due to all of their extra work!

We need more texts that are exciting, interesting, and on our level in order to continue to take the steps to reach our goals. These materials will give my scholars an opportunity to not only achieve their goals, but develop a lifelong passion for reading. My scholars have written that reading is important because it helps them learn to be better writers, critical thinkers, and people. They have written about their desire to find a cure for cancer and AIDS, to be authors and engineers, forensic anthropologists, lawyers, and humanitarians. They know that none of this will be possible for them unless they learn to become independent readers and thinkers. Please help them take the next step towards achieving their goals!
