Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Boys like to read, too! I teach 6th grade Language Arts and Literature Studies. The majority of my students are English Language Learners from low-income families. Because of the language barrier and the challenge of coming from homes of non-readers, my students' reading skills fall below average.

The majority of the books in my classroom library are hand-me-downs from my own and my friends' families -- and we were all girls! I have so few choices for the boys in my class. Too often boys think they don't like to read, and much of the time this is because they haven't yet found something that hooks them.

In the past two years I have discovered that boys love graphic novels. Boys who have never before finished a chapter book on their own devour a series of graphic novels, and then search for more. I have also found that when we visit the school library, it's the books about sports that my boys check out. Research states that the best way to become a better reader is to READ. If my classroom library is filled with books my students WANT to read, they WILL read.

Your help in providing "Books for Boys" will make it possible for ALL of my boys to find and have something they love to read, EVERYDAY. If they enjoy it, they'll read it. If they read and keep on reading, their reading levels will climb -- no question. And being a good reader is THE KEY to school success.
