Books for Boys

My students need 11 counting books about topics they are connected to including sports, coins, race cars, and dinosaurs.

This project is fully funded

I teach twenty four and five-year old "junior kindergarteners" at an inner-city, Title I school. We are an extended day school, which means my students not only go to "all day" pre-K, but have an additional two hours of school for learning and enrichment.

My class is predominately made up of boys: 70% of our class! One of the first songs we learn is "Take me out to the ballgame" and the children quickly reach for that book off of our shelves. They are also drawn to the one and only sports counting book. It is often the first book taken and trying to "share" this book is challenging for my eager readers.

I would love to stock my bookshelves with books that the boys in my class (and girls, too of course!) want to read: books about sports, race cars, coins and other fun childhood "collectibles" like buttons and crayons. I have chosen books that reinforce their mathematical skills in counting so that they are getting practice in reading and math at the same time! By having more high-interest books on our shelves we will have more readers and more mathematicians in our classroom.

What better way to build a young child's confidence as a reader but to have books they want to read right in front of them? The boys won't have to share the one and only sports counting book we have because with your donation there will be many high-interest books to choose from.
