Books for Beginners!

Help me give my students high-interest and culturally-responsive books to engage English Language Learners. The books I have picked are a mix of graphic novels and short non-fiction chapter books with lots of pictures--perfect for my reluctant readers.

My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade Multi-Lingual Language Learners who have moved to Magna from various countries. These students move in all throughout the year, the most recent just one week ago. Due to COVID-19, students have been more isolated from English than they normally are.

My students work hard to learn English and keep up with their fluent peers.

It's not easy to start at a new middle school, especially when students are also learning a new language. These students are racing to learn as much English as possible before starting high school.

My Project

As an English teacher, I am always encouraging my students to read. Our library has an awesome selection of books, but my students have unique needs and could use different types of books. I have also included some art supplies to aid in book reports.

These books appeal to middle-grade English learners because they are easy to read, have lots of pictures, AND are about things they care about.

They will be used during silent reading time in class and for book reports and projects. Students will not feel like they are reading "baby" books, but will also not be pushed to a level they aren't ready to be successful with.
