This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I began my career as an English professor, so it has been a great privilege to teach UCONN Early College Experience (ECE) courses at my current high school.

In my ECE classes, I strive to give my students the full college experience through a delicate balance of rigor and confidence-building.

At the end of the semester, they earn three college credits in English that are accepted at over 80% of colleges across the nation.

The course that I will be teaching next year is titled "Engineering the Epic: The Indestructible Walls of Troy." We will begin with Homer's classic epic, _The Iliad_, and then turn to a number of adaptations that stretch the boundaries of the original. We will end with Madeline Miller's bold reworking of Homer, _Song of Achilles_.

Our magnet program has an engineering focus, so we will focus on early civil engineering techniques while also considering the metaphorical engineering of the epic genre.

Since this is an ECE course, it is especially important for each student to have a hard copy of our course texts so that they might annotate it while reading at home, use it for in-class writing exercises, and refer to it during seminar discussions and presentations.
