FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Renie's classroom raised $1,259
This project is fully funded
I am a third grade teacher at Claremont Academy in the West Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, IL. Approximately 94% of the students qualify for free lunch.
My goal this year is to create an engaging learning environment, both in the classroom and at home. One of our most positive learning experiences is Reader's Workshop. During this time, students read books at their own level, meaning they can read the words and understand what they are reading, independently for 20-30 minutes at a time. The students are excited about the books they read. They also love the quiet time for them to think and reflect as they read. They are motivated to learn new things and share ideas with friends. Most of all, they feel smart and successful because they can read the material. When they feel competent, the change in their behavior, confidence, and work shows real progress in their learning. One student is able to sit calmly for half-an-hour in his seat while he reads. For the rest of the day, he is able to do his work by himself. Another student excitedly exclaims that he can read the material and wants to read the story to me. He is encouraged to do the work that is a challenge to him. To have this discovery of learning and confidence is life-altering for my students. However, not every child gets to experience this feeling of accomplishment consistently because our classroom library does not meet every child's needs.
Reading exciting books fosters a love of learning, but also gives them the strategies and skills that they need to succeed later in life. In order for children to have these opportunities, they need books they can read. Each child is working on a different skill. For some children, it is learning how to read the words. For others, it is understanding how the character feels. I can teach these strategies, but we need the materials to make this a reality. With this diverse collection of books, students will talk about their books, develop critical ideas, and write letters to me about their reading. A classroom library with books for all readers will make our reading experiences, both at school and at home, successful and engaging.
