My students need Guided Reading Collection books that are at their level. My students come to first grade at so many different levels, I need books that all my students can access.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students come from low-income homes, which can be hard on them, as some of them do not know when their next meal will be or how they are getting to school the next day. But, you would never know this when they are in the classroom.
My students are some of the most hardworking students around.
My classroom comprises of special education students, newcomer students, and hearing impaired students within a general education classroom. My classroom is a beautiful mix of students who are in love with learning and are excited each day when they get to learn something new. They are so proud of themselves when they learn something new and are extremely supportive of others who may have difficulty. Any time a student achieves something, it is like the entire class has achieved it. My students will stand up and cheer for a classmate who has reached a personal goal. Their support for one another is inspiring, and it has inspired me to do everything I can to make the classroom exactly what they need to continue to succeed.
My Project
My students come to first grade reading at so many different levels. Some come in reading short chapter books, while others come in not knowing their letter names or sounds. While I have a lot of books for those students who come in reading on grade level, I significantly lack books for my lower readers.
My lower-leveled students especially need high-quality books to help them advance their reading abilities.
My students at this level are often newcomer students or special education students. Right now I only have a handful of books at this level that are very old and falling apart. These students are stuck reading the same books over and over again as opposed to having a variety of new and exciting titles to read.
The Guided Reading Collection books would provide my students with so many amazing reading journeys through fiction and nonfiction stories. High-quality texts help readers progress and learn to love reading. I want my students to learn to love reading so they can continue to learn to love learning.
