This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the librarian, I want to be able to encourage my students to further their love of reading. One way to do this is to make sure they have access to the latest novel in the series they are already devouring. A library is a living organism that must be fed new books routinely to stay viable.

My students vary in personality as well as reading preferences and capabilities.

Some enjoy science fiction, others prefer realistic drama, and many desire suspense and horror. Similarly, they come from diverse backgrounds and cultures as well---students who just arrived in the US and barely speak English through Honors students who are heading to Yale in the fall. Our library aspires to stock books for the whole range of students who tromp into the library. What is most rewarding is hooking a student up with a series or an author. That way I know they will be reading for a while. And I can be almost assured that each book I give them in the series or by the author will appeal to them and be written at an appropriate level. However, if a series is incomplete, it makes this process significantly more difficult. When I discover a series that is inspiring to my students, I strive to collect every book in it so that they can continue to be intrigued and enchanted for weeks.

My Project

I know the students will gobble up the books on this list, as they come from various series and authors that are already wildly popular in our library. And I know that if I didn't proactively procure them and have them ready for the students to check out this coming fall when they trudge back to school, a desperate stampede of students would charge the circulation desk demanding that I buy them immediately. So, to circumvent this anticipated library raid, I hope this proposal receives generous donations over the summer.

Donations to this project will improve the library because when a series is complete and a healthy selection of books by certain authors is present, readers find literary closure which encourages them to hunt for more reading material.

Studies show that when the library has a complete series of books, patrons are happier, more gratified, and more well-read! And librarians have the satisfaction that they have done their job well by sprinkling the magic of story into the lives of their readers.
