My Students
It's time to update my classroom library. My students need to read, and with the right types of books available, are going to want to read!
I teach in an urban high school in one of the largest cities in Southern CA.
My students come from extreme poverty and challenging environments--I couldn't imagine the things they have to deal with on a daily basis. Even with the gangs, the drugs, the crime and the poverty, they still come to school with smiles on their faces eager to learn.
My Project
Literacy is essential! Most of my students do not own any books, and do not have access to reading material. With a good classroom library, I can loan books to students to get them excited about reading again. Many of my students never even read the basics you and I grew up with. That's why my proposal includes everything from the "Chronicles of Narnia" to the "Gangs of LA". Interesting, culturally relevant books are going to fly off the shelves!
My students so desperately need the support to become stronger students, and having books to read in my classroom to promote literacy on a daily basis is important for their futures.
