My Students
In September, my classroom will be full of about 15 eager first graders. Our community is diverse and full of culture and history. Student come from a ranger of socio-economic backgrounds. Often times school is the safest and most consistent part of my student's lives.
I want to provide a space where students feel both excited and challenged in our classroom.
My Project
During these unprecedented times, these books fulfill many different needs to start conversations. First some of these book help talk to students about the pandemic and why it was important for us to stay home and be socially distant, something that is very difficult for a child to understand. Second these books help push students thinking in term of race and racial identity. I want to students to know that their words have power and meaning, especially when you use them for good.
This project will help support students through this difficult time and also challenge them to think about race and racial identity starting at a young age.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
