Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I would like to purchase a few books that are designed for students with dyslexia. In the time that I have taught, I have had multiple students with dyslexia. As a fifth grade teacher, I have observed that these students are often embarrassed about their difficulties with reading.
In particular, I have noticed that they would rather not read at all than to read a lower grade level text in front of their peers.
Many of them are worried that they will be made fun of for reading "little kid books." For that reason, I would like to provide these students with books that appear to be closer to grade level novels on the outside, but contain specially designed text features and content that is more manageable for struggling readers, and especially those students who are coping with dyslexia.
