This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading should be a social experience. Laughing about funny parts, tearing up together as we discuss sad parts, and thinking about what we read - it takes reading to a new level. I would like to bring this joy and passion to my young students.

I teach first grade in an impoverished community in urban Illinois.

Nearly all of my students qualify for free lunch, and few have collections of books at home to read with family or other loved ones. My students love to read and beg to check out the newest books from our classroom library. I strive to put the best books in their hands in hopes that they will find a book that changes their reading lives forever.

My Project

I am requesting several picture book series for my first graders. They span a range of interest and reading levels to better meet the diverse needs of my students. Some are silly (Scaredy Squirrel) while others are more serious (Frog and Toad), but all can help support my students to become critical readers and to think about books in new and interesting ways. My students will delve into books, act out favorite scenes, and try to deeply understand the characters to better comprehend the texts. We will study how characters act across texts and try to get into their shoes. In order to do this effectively, we need books that support character study and book clubs at a level appropriate for my young readers. This project will provide the texts my students need for this high-level work.
