Help me give my students access to books written by people of color. We need access to more books, so we can have more authentic representation of our classes and our students.
I teach in a Minneapolis high school. These students are passionate, fun and inspiring. Many of my students come from low-income households, where over 90% of our population qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. I have seen students get jobs and then give their paychecks to their parents, or help cover certain household bills. More than once, I've been impressed with their resiliency, and travel over an hour on public transportation one way to get to a job to earn money. My students are struggling in many areas, but continue to have the ability to strive and attain a high school diploma.
My Project
Representation of BIPOC in literature is imperative to understanding our world. Often BIPOC are missing from stories, or are supporting characters within a story, versus being the lead.
We need books that have people of color as main characters!
Our students are eager to read these books, but we don't have enough copies! We put them up for a vote and our students want to read! During this time of distance learning, it has become paramount to give students tangible books to hold, and not give them more screen time.
Help us engage our students in reading, and hoping we get more students to become active readers.
