I teach 18 low income 4-year-old kindergartners in an urban school district. All of the students that attend my school receive free breakfast and lunch on a daily basis. The students I work with are exposed to extreme amounts of violence and several have families that are unable to support them financially. These students are lacking the materials they need to be successful in the classroom, especially with our school district's tight budget. My students appreciate every donation our classroom receives and everything that comes into our classroom is put to good use.
My Project
My students need different kinds of books to enhance their learning. Our classroom library needs to be refreshed with books that are in good shape and have different genres. The books requested vary in genres/themes and include books about science, engineering, social skills, growth mindset, different cultures, and books for enjoyment.
The books requested would enhance our whole group read aloud time with titles that require deeper level thinking.
I requested hard cover books because students are still working on their book handling skills and this will preserve the books longer. It would be great for the students to have a wide variety of different books to choose from. We are currently limited in the titles we have in our reading area and many of the books are falling apart or ripped from years ago. My students have shown interest in reading and are very excited when new titles are introduced. I find the students often searching for books to re-read after we have read them as a whole group.
We appreciate every donation that is received. I can guarantee that these books will be put to great use on a daily basis.
