My Students

Kindergarten students LOVE to listen to stories on our group carpet.

There are so many concepts that can be taught in Kindergarten through good, quality, literature!

I have been teaching for ten years and many of our books have been loved so much the pages are falling out! We need new books, and we need new books that we haven't read before. My school district has also adopted a brand new reading curriculum, but I am missing vital trade books to be able to teach the lessons.

My students attend a public school that houses kindergarten through fifth grade. I currently have 25 students in my classroom and come from different learning backgrounds. The majority of my students are five years old and come from all different walks of life.

My Project

Shared Reading is important in the kindergarten classroom as it is a critically important factor in young children's reading development. The use of books during Shared Reading allows me as the teacher to read to a group of children so that they can all experience the print and the illustrations.

When I read to my students, they are exposed and enjoy good, quality literature that they might not otherwise experience!

With the use of books, we can actively read the book together, talking about concepts of print, practicing letter and word identification, and practicing to read together chorally.

My students would also benefit from a selection of books that talk about proper manners to use in school such as sharing, what to do when they get angry, problem-solving, learning to be an active listener, being truthful, and how to be thankful. Kindergarten students are a developmental age and they are able to relate to characters in a story. Good quality literature allows me to connect with my students and their personal experiences as children!
