Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten teacher in a very low income neighborhood. While we do have many books in the classroom, most of them are old, torn apart, and missing pages. It breaks my heart to see children, showing such a great interest in reading and literature, have to settle for broken and ratty books.
I would love for my kindergarden children to have the chance to open up a brand new book. The opportunity to experience the "new book smell" and feel the crisp pages is an experience every child should have. A love of reading is the first step to a firm foundation in literacy development. Hearing stories and reading to themselves lets children practice concepts of print and phonemic awareness, which is so essential to the learning process.
I am asking for five different library sets. Each one focuses on a different area of academic or cultural learning.
1. Dr. Seuss Classic Library
2. Multicultural Stories
3. Character Building Stories
4. Storybooks for Learning Centers
5. Alphabet Stories
These books address topics and themes such as friendship, sharing, cooperation, loyalty, kindness, self esteem, bravery. Many of the stories are told through rhyme and repetition, which are essential ingredients when children are learning to read.
