Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten teacher in a very low income neighborhood. While we do have many books in the classroom, most of them are old, torn apart, and missing pages. It breaks my heart to see children, showing such a great interest in reading and literature, have to settle for broken and ratty books.
I would love for my kindergarteners to have the chance to open up a brand new, hardcover book. The opportunity to experience the "new book smell" and feel the crisp pages is an experience every child should have. A love of reading is the first step to a firm foundation in literacy development. Hearing stories and reading to themselves lets children practice concepts of print and phonemic awareness, which is so essential to the learning process.
I am asking for a "Classic Kindergarten Library", that comes with 30 favorite kindergarten books including: The Snowy Day, Oh My Gosh, Mrs. McNosh! A Pocket for Corduroy, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! There’s a Nightmare in My Closet, Stone Soup Quick as a Cricket, Big Red Barn, Mister Seahorse, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, It Looked Like Spilt Milk
The Giving Tree, To Market, To Market, The Little Engine That Could, Where the Wild Things Are, Guess How Much I Love You, Caps for Sale
Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?
The Rainbow Fish, No, David! The Very Hungry Caterpillar, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Napping House, The Grouchy Ladybug, Jump, Frog, Jump!, If You Give a Pig a Party, The Gingerbread Boy, If You Take a Mouse to School, and Are You My Mother?
These books address topics and themes such as friendship, sharing, cooperation, loyalty, kindness, self esteem, bravery. Many of the stories are told through rhyme and repetition, which are essential ingredients when children are learning to read.
