Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a high-poverty school where more than half of my students are learning English and/or come from low income homes. Many of my students have no books at home.
We have an urgent need for more decodeable reading materials in our classroom. My students need lots of practice with word families, sight words, and phonics.
Kindergarten isn't what it used to be. Students these days are expected to learn to read fluently in Kindergarten at a level 4 or above. This means they must know how to read sight words and have strong phonics skills, enabling them to sound out unknown words. My students need word family readers, sight word readers, and emergent readers to solidify these essential reading skills. We need a word family pocket chart to effectively review and post word families in the classroom to increase reading fluency. My students need word family write and wipe boards to practice writing the words they are learning--as reading and writing do go hand in hand!
Your help will make a measurable difference in the educational experience of my students. They will be able to take the books home to practice their reading skills, as well as to carry those skills over into their writing development. You will be providing one more opportunity for these children to become truly literate--an invaluable key to the doors of their future.
