My Students

My inspiring kindergarten students need these "King Series" leveled readers so that they can continue to challenge themselves and become better readers.

My students come from the largest public housing project in our city.

Nearly 85% of my students have no father or male role model, 100% of my student receive free lunch and our school is the poorest school in our large district. They face many obstacles to learning and success, yet they show up to our kindergarten classroom everyday with smiles on their faces and a burning desire to learn. There favorite thing to do is read and they have pushed themselves to read far beyond anyone's expectations. They refuse to let their circumstances hold them back. Every day they inspire me, they encourage me and they motivate me. They refuse to give up, they refuse to fail and they refuse to be anything but the best!

My Project

I am requesting the "King Series" leveled reading books so that I can continue to challenge my students to increase their reading skills. My students ask for books every day so that they can read them. Each student has a book bag that holds all of the books that they are currently reading on their level. Research says that children should read 20 books on their level so that they can grow and continue to improve. We have nearly exhausted our leveled book collection because my students want to read all day! This is a great problem to have and I want to provide my students with even more books to keep their love of reading alive! The great thing about the "King Series" of books is that my students will be reading books with characters that look like them. This is so important for my students because too often they don't see themselves in the books. By seeing themselves in these books, they will be even more motivated to read!

These books will change my students lives because it will make them strong, competent lovers of books and reading!

This love of reading will continue with them as they continue their education and will build a great foundation for success in the future!
