My Students

My third grade students are from San Francisco's Fillmore/Western Addition neighborhood. They're researchers, basketball players, mathematicians, dancers, engineers, artists, and comedians. They're inventive, inexhaustible, and incredible. They're resilient, curious, and a whole lot of fun.

And they need more access to books during distance learning.

My Project

With our school and city libraries closed, students are at home relying almost entirely on eBooks and recorded read-alouds.

I am collecting culturally relevant books to create a book exchange system for four third grade classes.

Reading instruction is more impactful when students have books in their hands. Over-reliance on digital platforms can create challenges for students – from inconsistent wireless internet to limited technology skills. I need books at a variety of reading levels that students can read independently or use as part of literacy instruction, no matter where they are on a given day.
