My Students
My students attend a public neighborhood school on the south side of Chicago. I teach a wide demographic of young adults ranging from freshmen to juniors in high school. Next year, I will also be serving seniors. I have about 150 students divided up between English II: American Literature and AP Capstone Seminar and Research. My students are in desperate need of more resources and some individual feedback. Since this is a public school, they often fall victim to budget cuts, and they don't deserve to have their educational path rerouted as a result of poor funding; they deserve more. I want to supply these wonderful scholars with technology to further enhance their researching, writing, collaborating, and presentation skills. I truly believe that many of these students are bound to do amazing things that will change America in a meaningful, positive way.
These students are honestly the kindest, most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of teaching.
They are respectful individuals, and they will use your donations to improve their academic skills in preparation for higher education and beyond.
My Project
My students are highly inquisitive and active readers, but they lack the easy access to literature that other students may have.
By providing a classroom library with a variety of texts, including young adult novels, my students will learn to appreciate reading and how to care for books.
As a class, we will create a filing system, a book review and rating corner, and a selfie-with-my-book wall. I want to promote reading as a social event, and the classroom library will not only help students reading comprehension and enjoyment, but it will also help them learn how to properly care for books. The library system will have a check-in/check-out system that teaches deadlines and how to request extensions.
One activity that will utilize this library is called "First Chapter Friday," and it was created by "Making Meaning with Melissa." We will have a reading activity from the first chapter of each book on every Friday. If a student likes the first chapter, then they can request to check the book out for independent reading.
