Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are as diverse as New York City in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and ability. Our school demographics are sixty-two percent Hispanic, twenty-eight percent black, five percent Asian and three percent white, with over 85% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.

I have students who come to school with so little and students coming to school without breakfast and without backpacks.

Some cannot live at home with their parents and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges including mental health issues, gun violence, and pregnancies. I want to be able to use my time with my students to provide them all with the educational opportunities they deserve.

My Project

Most often the books students are asked to read in school are for academic purposes. They are to teach ideas of tone, theme, literary structures - but very infrequently are they used to help inspire and explore creativity.

How are students to build their creative muscles when they are not given creative texts to explore?

To remedy that, I want to bring in more creative texts to my classroom, so students can see more ways to explore creativity in story telling, and character design. Through these texts students will be able to see stereotypes turned on their head, old stories seen through new creative means and more. As they build up a greater understanding of how to look at characters and situations in creative ways, they will soon be able to build their own characters and stories using their own creativity. With the help of these stories and texts, students will be able to look at all the ways creative choices matter, from backgrounds, to character roles and personality traits. It is my hope that we can build not only great readers, but great creative minds as well!
